At the call of the M62 Movement, several hundred Nigeriens demonstrated peacefully in the streets of the capital Niamey, on Sunday September 18, 2022, to demand the departure of the Barkhane force.

The presence of the French military in West Africa provokes widespread anger. On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the capital, Niamey, to protest against France’s Operation Barkhane, which has deployed 1,000 soldiers to fight jihadist groups in Niger.

Through cries and on several placards, one could read: “Barkhane out”, “Down with France”, “Long live Poutine and Russia”, “Release the criminal French army” or “the colonial army Barkhane must leave “.

“There are anti-French slogans because we demand the immediate departure of the Barkhane force in Niger, which is alienating our sovereignty and which is destabilizing the Sahel,” Seydou Abdoulaye, the Movement’s coordinator, told AFP. M62 which is organizing the event.

Pushed out of Mali, some 3,000 French soldiers are still deployed in the Sahel, most notably in Niger, one of France’s main allies in this region.
